SUMMER IS MOST DANGEROUS TIME OF YEAR FOR UNATTENDED CHILDREN IN AND AROUND MOTOR VEHICLES
Results of First of Its Kind Parent Survey Revealed and New Bi-Lingual Education Campaign Launched
WHAT: Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety (ACTS) will release the findings of the nation's first survey asking parents about child safety in and around motor vehicles. Among the findings:
- The average age at which most parents stop holding a child's hand in parking lots;
- The portion of parents who will leave a child under five alone in the car.
ACTS will also launch a nationwide education campaign with materials in English and Spanish.
WHEN: Thursday, June 7 - 10 a.m.
WHERE: National Press Club, Lisagor Room
529 14th Street, NW, 13th Floor
Washington, DC 20045
WHO: Phil Haseltine, President, ACTS
David Westcott, Board Member, National Automobile Dealers Association and president of
Westcott Buick, Pontiac, Isuzu and GMC of Burlington, NC
Vincent Keane, CEO, Unity Health Care
Also included will be speakers from XM Satellite Radio and WIC
WHY: Not every car crash takes place in traffic. One out of ten motor vehicle-related child
fatalities occur off the public streets, in places like driveways and parking lots (such as vehicle back-overs, trunk entrapments, hyperthermia or heat-related deaths, getting caught in power windows and inadvertently putting the vehicle in motion by moving the shift lever).
ATTENTION EDITORS: B-roll tape of parents and children holding hands, children around vehicles, interviews with experts and parents in both English and Spanish, and screen shots of new website and brochures is available.
