Who is Cathy Gillen?
Cathy Gillen is an experienced communications professional with more than 15 years of client service work representing
national and regional clients including the
American Association of Retired Persons,
Institute of Transportation Engineers,
Governor's Highway Safety Association, the Ford Motor Company,
and many others.
Prior to going out on her own, Cathy worked as a Senior Counselor for Strat@comm, Inc. in Washington D.C., where she managed and coordinated public
relations programs for a variety of major associations and coalitions, such as Ford Motor Company's booster seat
safety and teen driving campaigns, the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America and the
American Highway Users Alliance.
Gillen, a well-known expert in highway safety, offers clients more than a decade of experience in transportation public affairs and policy, media relations,
event planning, lobbying and writing. Gillen has a proven record of executing highly successful media
campaigns for state and federal government agencies, as well as two highway safety non-profit organizations in Washington, D.C.
While at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the agency that regulates the motor vehicle
industry and promotes highway safety, Gillen was instrumental in launching numerous high-impact regulatory actions, research programs and public
information campaigns. Well versed in the areas of seats belts and child passenger safety, she helped lead the successful announcement of a new universal
child safety seat attachment system, as well as two booster seat campaigns ("Don't Skip a Step" and Ford Motor Company's "Boost America!").
She also helped promote several national child safety seat law enforcement mobilizations in conjunction with the
Air Bag and Seat Belt Safety Campaign, as well as a General Motors funded
report on African-American seat belt use.
As Director of Public Affairs for Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, Gillen placed op-eds and letters to the
editor in national and local newspapers to gain support for proposed highway safety legislation. She has led or assisted with dozens of news conferences
at all levels of government from the White House to state houses across the country. She has written remarks for Cabinet Secretaries (both federal and
state), Members of Congress, Governors, victims of highway crashes and corporate partners,
among others.
Prior to her positions with Strat@comm, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety and
NHTSA, Gillen held press jobs with the
Governor's Highway Safety Association, the Maryland State Highway Administration
